Ear Reflexology

Ear Reflexology

Ear reflexology has its roots in Chinese acupuncture that was practiced thousands of years ago but really grew out of Auricular Acupuncture in the 1950’s. Dr. Paul Nogier, a neurosurgeon and acupuncture practitioner in France began to research the specific points in the ear. His research was based upon tradition Chinese principles as well as orthodox practices during that time. Most of his research was published in 1972 as Treatise of Auriculotherapy. Nowadays Auriculotherapy recognizes around 200 specific points in the human ear that map to parts of the body. In fact the World Health Organization standardized the points on the ear in 1990.

Modern Ear reflexology practitioners utilize parts of Dr. Nogier’s research, aspects of traditional Chinese medicine as well as other more modern areas such as magnet therapy. Probably the most widespread use of ear reflexology is to reduce or eliminate pain but can also be used to lower blood pressure or balance hormones amongst other things.

Some reflexologists use magnets on the ears to apply pressure and stimulate the points on the ear. One magnet is placed on the back of the ear and another on the front over the specific point. Patients wear the magnets for 30 to 60 minutes a day and may cover more than one point at a time. This practice utilizes both reflexology theory as well as the theoretical benefits of magnet therapy.
